Enrichment & Personal Development

At Hindsford, we value the importance of offering the children enrichment and personal development opportunities. Because of this, within the weekly timetable there are sessions scheduled for the children to thrive and flourish in.

Personal Development

At Hindsford, we run a termly programme of personal development sessions.

An example of further detail for the global units can be seen below:

Reception:

Reception have been working on the National Nature Park Project and their work is contributing to a national study about the use of green spaces. They have been working hard to improve our own outdoor spaces within school.

Year 1 and Year 6:

Year 1 and Year 3 have been working with Wigan’s ‘Be Great’ Team on developing their own well being through exercise and developing a greater understanding of all children’s right to a positive wellbeing.

Year 2:

Year 2 have been working on the Goal For Gambia Project. They have been acting as courageous advocates, using their voice to stand up for injustice in the world and children’s rights to education across the globe. This have planned a non-uniform day in which they hope to raise funds and resources to send to The Gambia.

Year 3:

Year 3 are working on the Hedgehog Friendly Schools Award.  They have been raising awareness of Hedgehogs in the local area, creating Hedgehog-friendly spaces within school and even having a visit from a member of the community who rescues hedgehogs.

Year 4:

Year 4 have been working on Oxfam’s Send My Friend To School project where they have been looking at how global emergencies should not be preventing children from attending school in affected countries around the world. On 13th February, they presented a short film to Jo Platt, MP, who is taking their views to parliament.

Year 5:

Year 5 have been looking at Global Citizenship and children who have changed the world. They have been learning about how they can become courageous advocates and have shared with us through a display in school, how we can all become courageous advocates and how powerful our voices are.

Year 6:

Year 6 have been taking part in a WWF Study in partnership with the British Antarctic Survey using digital mapping to help scientists in searching for Walrus from space. They have discussed children’s right to live in a healthy world and they have acted on this conservation project to help shine a light on how changes in our world can impact on animal behaviour and how we want future generations to be able to share a planet with these wonderful creatures.

An example of further detail for the community unit can be seen below:

Reception, Year 1 & Year 2:

The children put on a nativity performance for members of the local community in December. They wrote invitations and served refreshments.

Years 3 & 4:

The children sang at Chanters Care Home in Atherton. They wrote letters to the residents to let them know that they were coming to sing and to wish them a Merry Christmas.

Year 5:

The children in Year 5 were very busy raising money, asking for donations and putting together shoe boxes for a community project where they invited community members in need to come and collect a box from under the Christmas tree at the front of school.

Year 6:

The children worked hard to develop our well-being garden at the front of school. This is to create a calm and relaxing space for members of the community to enjoy. They also made and sold seed balls and sold them to raise money to improve the mosaic.
